Things can get quite expensive in Animal Crossing, and as such, players were quick to find the most efficient way of making money. Finding and selling tarantulas, which could be sold at the shop for 8,000 bells each, became one of the predominant money-making strategies alongside buying and selling turnips on the stalk market. These creepy critters would only spawn at night, and hunting them for profit was the perfect way to end a long day of fishing and catching bugs.

As of today, tarantulas are no more. Every fish and insect in Animal Crossing: New Horizons has active months where they can easily be found and inactive months where they don’t spawn. In New Horizons, tarantulas are only active from November to April. Now that it’s May, players will need to wait until November rolls around to see them again. That doesn’t mean the nighttime hunts have to end, however, as there is a basically identical tarantula counterpart that is available in the game starting today.

Now that the tarantulas are gone, scorpions will likely become the prime target of New Horizons bug hunters in the coming weeks. Scorpions are almost exactly the same as tarantulas except for their appearance. They spawn at the same time of day and sell for the same price, they’re just active during a different set of months. They occupy the May to October gap that doesn’t feature tarantulas, making them a perfect replacement. Because of this, the tarantulas leaving will likely not have any effects on players’ bank accounts. The worst thing the tarantula departure can do for people is leave an empty spot in their critterpedia for a few months.

While tarantulas unfortunately won’t be back anytime soon, scorpions will still provide New Horizons players with an additional revenue stream alongside turnips. Instead of clearing trees to make a tarantula island for the next few months, they’ll just do the same to create scorpion islands. They may sound scarier, but they’re the same in practice. Even if the spawn rate for the creatures was reduced with a recent patch, people will find a way to get them to show up. Animal Crossing players always find a way for everything.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
