Sea bass have become so prevalent in the Animal Crossing franchise that even the writer of the fish pun the player reads upon catching it is tired of seeing it. However, there may now be hope for Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who can download mods for their Nintendo Switch.

A modder by the name SmuggestGirl created a program that removes all sea bass from the game. Since it is a large species fish, its shadow is often mistaken for rare fish like the Coelacanth or the Napoleonfish, which makes catching a sea bass all the more disappointing. Many have commented on the mod page with appreciative statements, thanking the modder with reviews saying things along the lines of “Not all heros wear capes.” The mod, called “No Sea Bass,” sets the spawn rate for the disliked fish to zero, so as long as players use this addition to the game, they won’t have see any of the “C+” fish again.
On the opposite side of this spectrum, the same modder also came up with a different program that has the opposite affect on the Animal Crossing game. “Only Sea Bass” is a mod that makes sure that any fish the player catches become the large fish while all other fish become essentially extinct. This mod is considerably less popular, but 11 brave souls have still downloaded it for themselves.
While sea bass can be irritating to players, it still gives them a good 400 bells for each fish brought to the Nook twins’ shop. Players with modded Switches have the ability to bypass these annoying fish on their copies of New Horizon once and for all, while those players without will still have to take the risk when they see a big fish’s shadow in the ocean around their islands.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
