A lengthy exchange with Beau, the lovable deer villager from Animal Crossing: New Horizons, has made its way onto Twitter, with the island resident making a shockingly meta claim. Talking to the protagonist, Beau pitches an amusing conspiracy theory that seems to confirm she’s figured out she’s inside of a video game, with the character running through a number of the more suspicious day-to-day occurrences she’s experienced while wandering the island.

The interaction begins with Beau telling the player that there are some suspicious rumors going around, with the deer claiming that some people are suggesting that “none of this is real.” She goes on to list a number of her daily activities that seem somewhat strange, claiming that fruit grows way too fast on trees, trees only have three kinds of different wood, and that pretty music seems to follow her everywhere for no reason. Funniest of all, she then turns her attention to Tom Nook, claiming the iconic character’s business model makes no sense at all.

“Yeah, I’ll take your seashells so you can give me back my own money to pay off a house I’m selling you,” she says, clearly poking the major flaw that fans have often stated about Nook’s loans. She concludes her very reasonable theory by stating that their lives are fake, before laughing, and claiming that she’d made it all up. Although Beau thinks she’s just winding the player character up, she seemingly has no idea of just how realistic her crazy fan theory was all along.

In reality, this is a hilarious joke from Nintendo who clearly is acknowledging the wide part of the fanbase who often share memes and gags about the nonsensical nature of Animal Crossing’s world and economy. It seems New Horizons has a ton of fun jokes, references, easter eggs, and secrets to discover that are in the same vein as this superb interaction, so here’s to hoping more are uncovered as players dig deeper and deeper into New Horizons’ updated take on the iconic series.
