Having won Wimbledon to end a long drought among British men, Murray on Sunday ended another failure of his country’s sports history. This time, it was winning the Davis Cup for the first time in 79 years. Murray seems determined to make 1936 disappear.

That year, remembered worldwide for the Olympic Games in Nazi Germany, was the last time Britain ruled the Davis Cup. Until now.

Not surprisingly, Murray’s two feats now compare him to Fred Perry. Glad you asked. Perry won Wimbledon in ‘36 and won both Davis Cup rubbers (yeah, that’s what a match in called in the competition) that year.

No wonder Murray is getting salutes from the famous and hangers-on via Twitter.
